It is said that in the days when Kingston and Pinos Altos were booming mining camps, persons traveling between the two always tried to arrive at this canyon and its reliable water at noon, hence the name. Vegetation consists of native grasses including side oats grama, and blue grama as major species. Canyons and hillsides are lined with mature pinon, juniper and oak.
