Listed on the historic register in 1977, this building was built before the early 1900's. The Marchiondo family , from Italy settled in Raton and opened the Mercantile building on June 1, 1913. The store included everything from denim to diamonds, food to shoes! The perfect stop for travelers just off the train and boy scouts headed to Philmont. They delivered to all the coal mines at the time. The train brought many supplies to the store. The upstairs serviced as a Hotel with rooms and separate entrance from the street. Since the gold ol days this building closed in 1980's and is currently vacant. Previous construction elimated the upstairs rooms creating a large open space great for loft living.
